My name is Debbie Impiazzi and I am the Administrator of the Family Support Project, formally the 1,000 Families’ Project at the Chernobyl Children Life Line.

The Family Support Project is a way of helping children and families in Belarus who could not possibly be able to afford the most basic necessities in life.  Families with sick children who live on very restricted diets, and families that have no money to feed the children or to pay for their rent, often one parent families or families with an adult or child that needs full time care.  Many of these families live in the villages in wooden huts and have no running water or heating, or they live in tower blocks in just one or two rooms with shared facilities, sometimes sixteen families will have to share a kitchen and toilet.

These families are hardworking; unfortunately most of the work in the villages is on the collective farm and is seasonal, with a salary of only £15.00 per month when work is available. The families work long and hard for up to 12 hours a day in harsh conditions.  The temperature can drop as low as -40 degrees in the winter.

This unique project aims to give a family £90.00 every six months through your sponsorship.  All of the money that you send to the family will be paid to your family.
We ask that you pay £15.00 per month by standing order. We will put you in touch with a family that needs your help and support and encourage contact communication.

January and July and are the months when the distribution takes place.  All the administration for the Project is carried out in our office in Haslemere.  The money is then sent by individual bank transfer to your sponsored family’s bank account.

When the project was started in 1998 it was called the 100 Families’ Project, as the target at that time was 100, this was soon to become 1,000 and now as we are approaching 1,000 Families we have decided that The Family Support Project is far more appropriate.
